Book Reviews

Here are some of the reviews we’ve received for “Get Your Eldercare Affairs in Order.”

“Gerontologist and columnist Wendy Johnstone has hit the mark with her book Get your Eldercare Affairs in order, a “how to” book that doesn’t insult the intelligence and does stimulate thought – and helps us identify our own solutions.  Wendy stimulates curiosity about what to do.  What can we do to make it easier for our children when we need care or die?

While I was reading Wendy’s book, Get your Eldercare Affairs in order I kept thinking of the famous quote from George Bernard Shaw: The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. Wendy makes the point that we have to be very clear and specific about our needs, wishes and expectations.

Wendy talks about the caregiver, a critical player in this piece.  As a friend of people who are going through the caregiver role locally, I hear all the questions and frustrations. And each situation is a bit different from all the rest – Wendy offers a chance to personalize your experience. The planning organizer pages were great – they helped raise other questions. Sign in my credit union:  People don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan.  Wendy’s book helps with the planning part.”

“The Organizer is great – very easy to read (user-friendly) and nice clean, simple forms to complete.”

“For years I have been waiting for something like this to come to my help.  I have been trying to get my life organized but the results of my so called “organization” are several pages of valuable information scattered in various “safe” locations, with instructions for future reference scattered in a variety of locations.  Now I have your book! Ta da!  With your book I can put down my information, when changes come up all I have to do is find my book and make, or delete, changes.”

“In the fall of 2015 my mother was 85 years young, driving and living independently.  I believed I was being proactive and planning well ahead when I attended Wendy Johnstone’s Eldercare Planning workshop.  I was so impressed by her wealth of knowledge that I purchased my copy of Get Your Eldercare Affairs in Order before leaving that day. The very next morning mom was in a car accident and was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.  Her life changed instantly and forever.  For my siblings and I it felt overwhelming – mom’s daily emotional and physical care, specialists, insurance settlements, Power of Attorney, home care options and managing her finances all became our responsibility. Thankfully I had my copy of Get Your Eldercare Affairs in Order.  During those stressful and emotional first weeks, I referred to this extremely practical manual for guidance.  The straight forward, point by point format and checklists makes it a very practical tool. I strongly recommend this manual!”

“You are amazing! What I tried to do in 2 months, you did in 1 week. You’ve helped us navigate the system, made sense of Mom’s disease, and gave back her independence and control. Thank you for making such a difference in Mom’s life and giving us, her family, complete peace of mind.”
